Growing stronger and needing to buy heavier weights is a good problem to have. Except when you have a home gym and don’t want to keep buying heavier weights! I decided to buy two Bowflex adjustable weights, which each can become weights up to 52.5 lbs.
As you can see in the photos below, Bowflex weights are wider than the average dumbbell, but they’re really easy to use.
To adjust the dumbbell weight, you turn the dials on both sides of the weight. That’s it. Lift the dumbbell up and you’re good to go!
The cost of the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells has increased a lot since I’ve bought these, but there are other, cheaper sets of adjustable dumbbells on Amazon as well.
However, since 2 20-lb weights cost around $70, and each Bowflex dumbbell goes from 5 lbs to 52.5 lbs in 2.5 lb increments, these 2 alone are significantly cheaper.
While it does take some getting used to the wider dumbbell, I’ve found that for goblet squats (or moves where you hold the side of the dumbbell upright), it’s actually quite comfortable to hold.
For a while, I was afraid that turning the dumbbell upside down or sidways, the plates would slide, but they stay in place! Phew!
There are two downsides to the Bowflex adjustable weights that I’ve experienced so far:
- When I’m doing a program that requires different heavy weights, these do take a few extra seconds to put back in the holder, adjust the weight and pick it up. It’s not significant, but if your program moves quickly, you may need to press pause to keep up.
- Doing moves like RDLs can be awkward to have two weights in a row. For those moves, I prefer doubling my weight with one Bowflex rather than using two Bowflex weights together.
Overall, I’m really happy with my Bowflex purchase. I am hoping I won’t need to buy dumbbells for a long time, if ever again! These are well made, compact and have almost every weight I could ever need.
