If you have not read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros yet, now is a great time to discover why so many people are HOOKED on this book — the second book of The Empyrean series, Iron Flame, just released yesterday!
Now, you can read Fourth Wing and without waiting, go right into Iron Flame. You lucky ducks; I’ve been waiting for Iron Flame to come out for months!
AND, I got my copy of the Fourth Wing special edition (with black edges) arrived too! Happy dance!
So, let’s take a step back. If you haven’t heard about Fourth Wing or read it…
About Fourth Wing
You can read more professionally written Fourth Wing summaries on Amazon, but essentially, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a fantasy genre book (with a bit of spice) that follows Violet Sorrengail.
The book starts as Violet is about to enter Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider. Up until a few months prior, she trained to be a scribe, so she starts off at a disadvantage. But even moreso as we learn about her real, physical condition that leaves her smaller, weaker and more brittle than the average person.
The Basgiath War College is deadly. Even just to enter the college, students need to cross the parapet, a very small (18 inches wide?) stone bridge that’s so high up, they die if they fall. Students die daily in their quest to survive, learn, be chosen by a dragon and train to become a rider.
Further, there are students at the school who Violet’s mom, General Sorrengail, is responsible for the deaths of their parents. They want revenge.
Violet has A LOT of odds stacked against her. But she is smart, makes strong friendships (or alliances), falls in love and more during her first year at Basgiath.
I can only assume Iron Flame follows her during her second year. I’m trying to avoid reading the summary myself so I don’t spoil anything for myself.

Iron Flame (book 2)
What’s with the Special Edition?
The Special Edition Fourth Wing is the book with sprayed edges. When Fourth Wing first came out, it had dragons sprayed into the edges. While this isn’t dragons, the black is a unique touch.
The Special Edition Fourth Wing books are likely going to sell out fast. But if you miss out, there are people on Etsy who will spray some for you. Beautiful options! But buyer please beware. If you’re crafty, you can try it out yourself, too.
(I am not one of those crafty people and so luckily got the version with sprayed edges!)

Would I recommend Fourth Wing?
For those of you who are like me, newer to the fantasy genre and dragons, I hope you find this book to be just as enthralling as I did. If it’s “not your thing,” I highly suggest trying it anyway; mostly because I thought the same thing before I read it. Rebecca Yarros does an incredible job of world building during the book without making you feel lost or bored.
I’m so excited to dig into Iron Flame, but also taking my time, knowing there are supposed to be 3 more Empyrean books. The wait is reminding me of the years between Harry Potter books. Agony!
I hope Iron Flame is just as good as Fourth Wing. I couldn’t put it down! I’ve already read Fourth Wing twice, even though I rarely re-read books! It’s just that good IMO. It helped get me out of my post-ACOTAR depression.
Have you read Fourth Wing and/or Iron Flame? What did you think? Or, why would you not want to read it? Please comment below, but no spoilers!
Thanks for reading!
