For so long, I have really shied away from yoga. It was too slow, too boring and I didn’t feel like I’d get a good workout. I’ve posted about figuring out Peloton workouts on my echelon bike, and then using Peloton classes daily for strength, barre, boot camp, stretching, running and more.
Maybe it’s the Peloton app’s encouragement to have a daily activity streak, but over the last few months, I’ve stopped really giving myself a full “rest day.”
My old “rest days” used to mean that I did no planned workouts. I was no longer taking time for myself to move my body. I’d probably fill it with cooking, laundry, etc.
Instead, I’ve incorporated Peloton yoga classes for my active rest days. It was a trial at first; something low impact (because of my Legg Calve Perthes hip issues) and help me do SOMETHING active.
To be clear, I’m not an expert, and I’m new to the yoga world. In case you were interested in dipping your toe into trying Yoga too, below might be helpful to motivate you to give it a try. #momistrying

Now that I’ve been through a few months of Peloton yoga classes, below are my takeaways:
- The instructors are awesome. They each of their own personalities, which you really feel during the workouts through their moves, words and vibes.
- I’ve listened to a lot of new music, due to the variety of themes and music each instructor chooses.
- Similar to my thoughts on the Peloton bike workouts, I end class often feeling inspired, motivated, and centered.
- They have beginner, intermediate and advanced workouts.
- The instructors often provide alternate, or modified, moves.
- Depending on the class, sometimes it feels very theraputic. I’ve laughed, cried, and felt introspective.
- In the Yoga section of the Peloton app, you can filter by length, difficulty, instructor, etc., just as you can in other sections of the app.
- Peloton yoga instructors will prompt you to use blankets, blocks, straps, etc. It’s not seen as a negative, but rather something you can use if you need it.
- Peloton yoga classes are easy to do when on vacation since they require no weights and little equipment.
I’ve tried yoga classes, yoga DVDs and more, but have never felt the same purpose for yoga like I do now. My biggest takeaway is that your yoga instructor is key; if you don’t enjoy the instructor and their teaching methods, you likely won’t enjoy the class.
My favorite Peloton yoga instructor is Kirra Michel. I love her positive energy, her stories, and her music lists. Her motivational words often hit my soul, it feels like therapy and like she’s talking directly to me.
As a result, I’ve really come to appreciate yoga beyond something to do that day. Peloton yoga classes have helped me to:
- Stretch out my muscles
- Calm my mind
- Focus on my balance
- Attempt new (sometimes scary) positions
- Be OK with wobbling or falling out of a position
- Stop judging myself so harshly
- Really connect with how my body feels and when I need to adjust
At the end of a yoga workout, I don’t feel exhausted or crazy sweaty, but that’s not my goal. I often feel proud of myself, and what I’ve accomplished. I feel like I’ve done something healthy for my body and my mind, which is much better than my past rest days.
Plus, it warms my heart whenever a child pulls out their yoga mat and does even one move next to me. I love them seeing mom exercise, get centered and calm before the day starts.
A friend once told me that if I wasn’t able to sit still long enough to meditate, it means that I really needed it to help stop my mind. I now feel that way about yoga… I never spent enough time after working out to really stretch or focus on my body, which means I really needed yoga all the more.
