Does anyone else regularly see Amazon influencer Facebook ads showing super cute outfits? OK, some are super cute and some are just not my style. Or, some outfits, well, I aspire to have that kind of style.
Thanks to Facebook algorithms, every time I interact with a specific outfit photo, it likely shows up again in a day or so. Like, “remember this shirt you liked?”
Finally one day, I decided I’d just go for it. I don’t have time to really shop for clothes. And since I have Amazon Prime, shipping is free, and I can return anything I don’t want. What’s the harm?
I decided to try to recreate 4 Amazon influencer recommendations. Here’s what I tried and the results.
#1: Sleeveless Blue Polka Dot Shirt and Belt Set
I’m a sucker for navy and polka dots so when I saw this blue polka dot shirt, I had to try it!
Here are the links:
1. Navy Polka dot shirt (size: medium): $25
2. Leather Belt with Double Ring Buckle (size: large): $14
I used my own jeans and nude heels, figuring I didn’t need to buy what I already owned… and, I never wear heels so buying more was unnecessary for my lifestyle.
I LOVE the blue polka dot shirt! Love love love! The fabric is comfortable and doesn’t seem like it’d wrinkle easily. Plus, I can wear a cardigan over it in the Fall/Winter. Versatile! And, it’s long enough to blouse nicely; when not tucked in, it mostly covers my butt. Keeping it!
The leather belt is also super cute, and I love that it comes in a set of three belts in black, dark brown and light brown. The rings are gold on all three. Plus, I haven’t bought a new belt in more than a decade, so it was time to add some to my wardrobe.
P.S. I follow Honey We’re Home on Facebook so her photo jumped out at me as being a recommendation from a trusted source.
#2: Pleather Leggings and White Sneakers with Stars
Did anyone else start seeing faux leather leggings EVERYWHERE? I LOVED the sneakers and was intrigued by the leggings. Could I pull these off? I wanted to find out:
Here are the items I ended up purchasing:
1. Star Sneakers (true to shoe size): $49
2. Faux Leather Leggings (size: large): $70
The reviews of the faux leather leggings were mixed, but I figured it can’t hurt to try them. But for $70, I knew I’d have to love them or I’d return.
To start with, I really LOVE the star sneakers. The mix of gold, white and silver shoelaces is so fun and they are very comfortable. It was obvious I was keeping the shoes.
I loved the faux leather leggings from afar but up close, you can see the wrinkling right under and behind the knee. This was actually a common complaint in the reviews. The pants were not tight, but it looks like they are. Returning these.
Note: You’ll see both of these items in the other outfit photos below if you want to see a further away view.
#3. Asymmetrical Batwing-Sleeve Sweater
This beautiful white turtleneck asymmetrical sweater looked SO cozy, and of course, it was paired with the faux leather leggings. I was a bit nervous about the white with my kiddos but kept true to the photo:
Here are the items I ended up purchasing:
1. Asymmetrical batwing-sleeve turtleneck, white (size: small): $43
This sweater comes in 32 different colors! I was a bit nervous about buying the white, but I wanted to stick to the photo. Plus, I thought this would be a very cozy but cute work outfit, and I can keep things white when kids aren’t around!
Can you tell I’m trying to recreate their poses?
So, the asymmetrical batwing-sleeved sweater was a beautiful white in person, and it was so soft and cozy. I also liked that it covered my butt so leggings were an option, but it didn’t seem as long on me as it was on the influencer. I didn’t think it’d look right with jeans but the front was too short for me to wear with leggings.
When I wasn’t holding my hand on my hip, the width made me feel huge. And this was a size small! On someone slim (like the influencer), this might have not been as much of an issue, but overall, I felt uncomfortable with the wide sweater, batwing look. Returned!
#4: Star Cardigan and Black Shirt
This outfit looked like it’d be super comfortable but also very cute, a little bit punk and youthful too. It didn’t feel like a “mom outfit” even though it included a cardigan.
Here are the items I ended up purchasing:
1. Star-Print Knit Cardigan (size: medium): $37
2. Black V-Neck Tunic (size: small): $20
I didn’t buy the black leggings or shoes, figuring I could use the star sneakers and faux leather leggings. I was really hoping I could buy multiple outfits to wear with both.
The star-print knit cardigan was super cute, just like in the photo. I was so excited about it!
But then I noticed two things I couldn’t tell from the influencer’s photo: 1) the cardigan is very thin, and 2) the white buttons are very obvious. This cardigan was more for wearing in air conditioning when the weather is warm outside. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see myself wearing it that often, so returning it!
However, the black tunic shirt under the cardigan was a hit! It’s lightweight enough to wear under a cardigan, thick enough to wear on its own, and long enough to cover my butt. It’s a perfect, versatile item. Keeping it and I might buy it in more colors (it comes in 17 different colors)!
Results from My Amazon Influencer Shopping Spree
In case you’re keeping track, I ended up keeping the sneakers, two sleeveless shirts and the belts. I was sad to return the faux leather leggings and two sweaters, but I could see all three working so well for someone else’s body type or lifestyle.
I don’t know how willing I’d be to buy items from Amazon influencer photos again, but it was fun to give some new styles a try. It’s also great when the influencer shows an entire outfit to help us less stylish folks understand how to make an outfit look cute!
