A few months ago, I started hearing about ChatGPT without thinking much of it. I’ve started using it at work when I remember to try it out, but for whatever reason, I hadn’t put it together with how it can help my mom life until recently.
Let’s just put it out there, I am amazed more people aren’t talking about how it can be used in everyday life.
Have you heard about ChatGPT yet?
If not, go Google it to learn more. Seriously, I’m not an expert on it. But from a non-technical perspective, you can ask ChatGPT a question with a lot of detail, and it scours the web to put together an answer for you. But it is also smart, artificial intelligence that can build on its own answers and your feedback.
Keep in Mind: ChatGPT was last updated in 2021 so it doesn’t know about recent news, or the new Barbie movie. Womp womp.
How do I access or start using ChatGPT
To start, ChatGPT is free. Yay!
To access ChatGPT, go to https://chat.openai.com/ . You will need to sign up or log in with your existing Google, Apple or Microsoft account.
Remember which email address you use because in the future when you sign in, you can see your previous requests and the answers. Unless you delete them, of course.
Questions You Can Ask ChatGPT
So here’s the beauty of ChatGPT: you can ask it questions and get answers that are so specific, they help save you time. Seriously, you get answers that can actually help.
Below are a few example questions or messages (because it doesn’t have to always be questions):
- Give me a list of 20 kid movies available on Netflix that are appropriate for 4 year olds.
- What are 20 indoor rainy day activities that I can do with a toddler?
- I’m planning a birthday party for my 8 year old. What are 20 ideas of indoor spaces where I can hold a birthday party for about 25 kids, ages 6 to 8 years old?
- What are good birthday gifts for boys who are turning 11 years old and like legos, but are not legos?
- What is a crockpot recipe for 3 lbs of chicken breast that doesn’t require a lot of fresh vegetables, chopping or any spicy hot foods?
- What are 10 ideas to help a 7 year old going into 3rd grade to keep up their education over the summer while at home?
- What is the suggested hourly rate to pay one teenage babysitter who will be watching 3 kids (ages 5, 9 and 11) at home for 4 hours on a weekend evening?
- What activities should I do in Williamsburg, VA for a weekend trip? All activities must be appropriate for young kids.
- I’m reading “How to Marry a Marquis” by Julia Quinn for my book club. What are some questions or talking points I can bring up about the book during my book club meeting?
Do those give you a good idea of how ChatGPT might differ from using a search engine like Google? The answers I got for these types of questions were very specific to my request.
But you can get even more specific, like:
I have 3 kids, ages 6-12. I need to prepare 5 lunches a day for one week for all 3 kids. One kid has a peanut allergy. One kid doesn’t like oranges. Write me a meal plan and grocery shopping list, and label each meal 1-3 to differentiate who each meal is for by day. Keep the shopping list cost to under $150.
After ChatGPT gave me the shopping list and meal plan by day for each kid, but I didn’t know how much of what to buy. So I responded with:
For the shopping list, how much of each food item should I buy?
And it responded with an updated grocery shopping list that told me how much to buy of each item.
In case you missed it: ChatGPT is able to revise its answers! It takes context from your last message and builds on it.
But you can get even MORE detailed in your messages. And with very sensitive topics. You can almost turn to ChatGPT like for advice.
My 6-year-old son is adopted but doesn’t know. How do I tell him so that we can preserve our relationship and talk about it in a constructive way? How can I help him feel supported? I want you to be specific and use tangible things that I can do or say. Don’t be general. Can you give me 15 bullet points of age-appropriate language that I can use when talking to him about this topic?
OK so I don’t need that advice, but I was just brainstorming ways to really test the extent of ChatGPT, and its results did not disappoint.
If you have a few minutes, I suggest you play around with ChatGPT or Google Bard (similar thing) to see how it can help you with your life.
